F.A.Q.

How frequent are the sessions?

This depends on the problem being treated, which therapy you're engaging with, how severe your symptoms are, and how well they respond to treatment. Regular attendance is important to ensure you see benefits from our work together. Leaving too much time in between sessions can make therapy less effective. Initially, weekly sessions are common, the same day and time will be reserved for you each week. In some cases more or less frequent sessions may be recommended and/or preferred by you. Further down the treatment journey we may put some bigger gaps between the sessions to allow you the time you need to apply the skills you have learned in our work together. Following your initial assessment, wherever possible, I'll advise you of the recommended number of sessions. Where this is not possible (i.e. where no relevant clinical guidelines exist), we will agree to work together in blocks of 4-6 sessions and review how things are going after each block to decide if further sessions are needed.

This depends on the the age of the client, and which therapy they're engaging with. Most sessions are around 60 min. For younger children/adolescents or people with specific health needs sessions of 45 min may be offered instead. Certain treatments such as the integrative mind-body therapy is usually offered in 75 min sessions for adults/older adolescents, or 45 min sessions for younger children/adolescents. During your initial assessment, we will discuss and agree the length of your sessions based on your specific needs and what relevant clinical guidelines recommend.

Unless otherwise specified, treatments are delivered fully online via secure video call software such as MS Teams or Zoom (free to use for Synergia clients). Research studies suggest that therapy via video calls can be as effective as face to face. For this reason, many NHS services also continue to offer video therapy. I have many years of experience of working with NHS and private clients in this way.

Video sessions enable you to access therapy from the comfort of your home or another suitable confidential space. They also save you time and money on commuting to/from therapy sessions. Some people may struggle to leave their home due to physical or psychological symptoms they are experiencing. Some clients may also live away geographically from where I am based. Not having to hire a venue to see my clients face to face also means that I can offer my services at lower prices.

I want to ensure that all clients who want to work with me can access effective, affordable therapy wherever possible. In rare circumstances and as a last resort we may agree to do therapy via telephone instead. However, many clinical guidelines do not recommend this, which is why doing it via video calls is the standard option I offer. Some of my services are offered both face to face and online (mostly group courses, classes and workshops), see specific event/therapy descriptions for details.

The aim of the initial 1-2 sessions is for us to get to know each other and for me to learn in depth what you hope to gain from our work together (your treatment goals). We will discuss your current symptoms and how they affect you physically + psychologically and how this in turn impacts on different areas of your life such as work/education, self-care, relationships, hobbies/leisure time etc. You will be asked to complete some evidence-based symptom questionnaires relevant to your main problems. We will discuss suitable treatments I can offer you, before deciding together on the best way forwards. I will also advise you of any additional treatments that may be helpful for you to explore if I do not offer them myself. When working with children/adolescents or clients who require significant support day to day, relatives or carers are often included in some or all therapy sessions (with consent of the main client). Depending on type of problem and preferred therapy, some assessments will also include postural, movement and breathing assessments in the first few sessions.
